In this Q&A, Graham Jones answers five questions about raising children God’s way. The biggest mistake Christian parents make is assuming, or telling, their children that they are born again when they have never encountered Jesus, which creates cultural Christians and anesthetizes them against the gospel. Let your children tell you, and look for genuine worship. The second biggest mistake is choosing a church for its programs rather than choosing a spiritual church for yourself. To raise children who genuinely love God, raise them in the love of God, so they recognize counterfeit love when they meet it. Biblical parenting in today’s world looks as it always has, because God doesn’t change. Separate principles from practices: parents carry the primary responsibility for education, but there is no law on homeschooling, TV or phones. Grace, love and discipline are not balanced in percentages; go all in, eleven out of ten, on each. A strong-willed child is not a bad child; God may have put that strength there. Channel it toward faith and righteousness, and don’t engage the child’s will. Engage your boundaries and authority calmly and without backing down, like the teacher who simply knew she was in charge.
