God does not see the way we see, and sin distorts our ability to perceive. Ezekiel’s call to see with our eyes, hear with our ears and set our hearts on what God shows us reminds us that we perceive with the heart, not only the eye. Many of us are poor judges of our own hearts. We walk along thinking all is well until something comes “out of the deep” and we wonder where it came from. Sin comes from inside, not outside: a spouse doesn’t create anger, she presses a button already there. Jeremiah says the heart is hard to know, but the Lord searches it. Since we perceive circumstances through the grid of what is in our hearts, we need keys to recognise it. First, listen to our words, because out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks, especially when we are offended. Second, ask the Lord to show us. Third, watch our reactions, because God uses circumstances, as with Israel in the wilderness, to reveal what is inside. Israel “went astray in their heart.” The right response is to see, repent, and let the Holy Spirit displace wrong things with His fruit, learning to thirst for living water.
