Finding and Fulfilling God’s Will: Your Questions Answered

We have spent this entire week focusing on one of the most vital subjects for every believer: how to find and, more importantly, how to fulfill God’s will for your life. Today I take time to respond to the questions many of you have sent in. Thank you for sending them. This is a conversation that matters deeply. If you have more questions, put them in the comments or email me. I will get back to you as soon as I see them.

Before we jump into the questions, a few quick words. If you are new here, welcome. A big thank you to all of you who have joined our growing YouTube family. We are grateful for every one of you. If you have not yet subscribed, I encourage you to do so. I also send out my teaching notes each week through our email newsletter. The link is below. And to all our ministry partners, whether you give a little or a lot, you are loved and deeply appreciated. Your prayers and support make it possible for us to keep sharing the Word around the world.

As it is written in Romans 12:1-2, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

Let us open our Bibles and walk through these questions together.

How Do I Find God’s Will?

The first question is simple and direct: How do I find God’s will? My answer is to go back and watch the previous three teachings in this series. They lay a strong foundation. But let me add more here because this question comes up again and again.

God’s will is not a single blanket statement dropped from heaven. It is a continuum. He knows your responses and has already factored them into His plan. I remember the early days when I began traveling in America. I lived in France in the early 2000s and would print out directions from Mapquest before every trip. Those pages worked well as long as you never made a mistake. Miss one exit on a busy six-lane highway in Philadelphia and you could spend miles trying to recover. Many of us view God’s will the same way. We believe we have taken a wrong turn, wasted time, joined the wrong church, or made decisions that ruined everything. We think the plan is now off track forever.

Here is the glorious truth. God knows exactly where you are today. He does not work with outdated paper maps. He recalibrates in real time. Even if you have taken wrong turnings, He adjusts from your current location and continues leading you forward. He does not punish you or declare the journey over. He says, “Here is where you are now, and here is where we are going.”

The key to doing God’s will for the rest of your life starts with doing His will for you today. Obey Him in this moment. That daily obedience leads you into His will for tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after that. If you keep walking with Him day by day, you will end up fulfilling His will for your entire life. It really is that simple and that profound. Walk with Him. Listen to His voice. Renew your mind. Surrender daily. The path becomes clear step by step.

Can I Miss God’s Calling?

The second question is honest and sobering: Can I miss God’s calling? Yes, you can. I believe many people do. Frankly, more miss it than fully find and walk in it. But here is the good news. No matter how old you are or how far you have wandered, God is still inviting you back. He redeems the time because the days are evil. He can restore the years the cankerworm has eaten. While there is breath in your body, it is not too late to step into His calling.

Obviously someone who embraces God’s calling early and lives it out fully will produce different fruit than the person who surrenders only months before death. Yet God’s rewards are not strictly based on length of service. Jesus told the parable of the laborers in the vineyard. Some worked from the first hour and received their wage. Others came later—at the third, sixth, ninth, and even the eleventh hour—and still received the same. God’s generosity is astonishing.

As it is written in Matthew 23:37, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!”

Jesus wanted to gather them, but they were not willing. He did not force His will as if we were puppets. We must make ourselves willing. We surrender our will to His, just as Jesus prayed in the garden, “Not My will, but Yours, be done.” Change your will. Yield it to Him. That is the pathway back into His calling.

Why Is Character Important with Our Calling?

The third question connects directly to what we have already touched on this week: Why is character important with our calling? The calling, the mission, the gifting, the grace, the anointing, the connections, and the resources come from God. Yet there is our part. We collaborate with Him through surrender, learning, and development.

Imagine you are called to pastor. You may be gifted and anointed, but if you do not know the Bible, God cannot use you to the fullness of that calling. Character forms the foundation that holds everything else. Over time character dominates gifting. Anointing may open doors quickly, but character sustains what the gift attracts. We have seen gifted men and women rise fast only to fall because their character could not carry the weight.

Character is not a gift dropped from heaven. It develops as choices become habits and habits shape who we are. By the power of the Spirit and the Word we change our choices, form godly habits, and allow the fruit of the Spirit to transform our soul. Character becomes the foundation of what we do. Let the Holy Spirit move from your spirit into your soul and change how you actually operate.

Should We Be Led by Open or Closed Doors?

The fourth question is practical: Why are some doors closed to us? I would reframe it this way: Should we be led by open doors or closed doors? In my experience, following open or closed doors is one of the worst ways to discern God’s will. God does open doors. Paul spoke of an effective door of ministry. Yet Satan opens doors. People open doors. We sometimes force them open. The wind can blow a door open. Sometimes hinges are loose and doors swing by themselves.

An open door does not necessarily mean God sent you through it. I have had doors open that looked promising. One time I was invited onto a major Christian television program that could have brought significant resources to the ministry. The Lord said no. I obeyed. Another time an open door took me to Africa without prayer. I did some good, but I also caught malaria. The door being open did not mean I was under God’s protection in that moment.

As it is written in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

Do not be led primarily by open or closed doors. Be led by the Spirit of God, by His Word, and by relationship with Him. Ask, seek, knock. Secondarily, listen to godly counsel from mature believers, your spouse, or elders. Open doors may confirm, but they should never be the main guide. Relationship with the Lord is the true compass.

What Does True Surrender Look Like?

The final question goes to the heart of everything we have discussed: What does true surrender look like? We present our bodies as a living sacrifice. At one level we can declare, “Lord, I give You my life,” and mean it. That is good and powerful. Yet there come times and seasons when the Holy Spirit puts His finger on a specific area and asks, “Will you surrender this?” This is usually where the real cost is felt, because He knows exactly what we are clinging to—pride, reputation, children, finances, plans, or other things.

When we refuse, we are essentially saying our will is better than His. The truth is the opposite. His way always leads to the best life. He leads us in the way we should go for our profit and benefit. All of us face moments when our soul, friends, or the enemy whispers that life would be better if we did it our way. The Frank Sinatra approach—“I did it my way”—sounds appealing but leads to regret. True surrender requires both obedience and faith.

I remember a season when the Lord asked me to surrender my most precious possession at the time—an Ovation guitar I had scrimped and saved for years to buy. It was my baby. I fought Him but eventually obeyed and gave it away. Months later, on my honeymoon at Ruth Heflin’s camp in Richland, Virginia, my wife and I walked into a guitar store and saw a beautiful instrument. That evening in the service Ruth Heflin pointed at me and gave me a check for the exact amount needed. Leah knew immediately we were to buy it. Since then I have owned many guitars, some quite valuable. You cannot outgive God. That release opened the way for greater blessing.

True surrender means obeying the Holy Spirit in the specific areas He highlights. It requires faith that His will for you in that area is better than your own. Surrender your life to God generally, then respond to the specific invitations He brings. That is how we prove His good, acceptable, and perfect will.

This week’s teaching has only begun to touch the depth of this glorious subject. Keep walking with Him day by day. Surrender fully. Develop character that can carry the calling. Stay close to His voice. Do not be led by doors but by relationship. You will find and fulfill the will of God for your life. He has a delightful path prepared for you.

Selah.

200-Word Summary:
Finding and fulfilling God’s will unfolds through daily obedience, full surrender, and character development. God’s will is a living continuum. He knows your present location and recalibrates your path like a modern GPS, even after wrong turns. You can miss His calling, but it is never too late—He redeems the time and restores what was lost. Character holds the gifting God gives; without it even great anointing eventually fails. Do not be led by open or closed doors, which can come from many sources. Be led by relationship with the Lord, His Word, and godly counsel. True surrender goes beyond a general declaration to specific obedience when the Holy Spirit highlights an area. The guitar I surrendered years ago opened the way for greater blessing. You cannot outgive God. Walk with Him day by day, surrender fully, develop character that matches your calling, and you will prove His good, acceptable, and perfect will. The path is clear: obey today, and tomorrow will take care of itself.
