The Power of Your Words to Bring God’s Promises into Reality

You are learning to speak the language of heaven. Heaven speaks the language of promise, and God wants His children to speak the same language. Your words carry power to shape your life and to bring the promises of God from heaven into your everyday reality.

As it is written in Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

**The Kingdom Is Advancing, Yet We Live in the Tension**

God is sovereign, and one day the Author will step onto the stage. The kingdoms of this world will become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ. Yet right now we live in the time between D-Day and VE-Day. The kingdom of God has broken in, but it is not yet fully manifest on the earth.

Jesus taught us to pray, “Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” We do not discover God’s will simply by looking at what happens around us. We discover God’s will by reading His Word. And one of the most powerful ways to bring heaven to earth is by taking God’s Word and putting it in our mouths.

There is a remarkable connection between the mouth and the heart. Romans 10:8-10 tells us the word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. With the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Whatever you put in your mouth will eventually sink down into your heart. And whatever fills your heart will eventually come out of your mouth.

You cannot force yourself to believe something by sheer willpower. But you can choose, as an act of your will, to put God’s Word into your mouth. Over time those words will shape what you truly believe.

**Key One: Words Shape and Define Your Internal Reality**

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

In the same way, the reality of your inner world is framed by the words you speak. Years ago God called me to live by faith financially. I had two problems: no money and no faith. I was terrified of running out, of going bankrupt, of failing in ministry.

The Lord spoke to me clearly: “Graham, start taking My words.” He pointed me to Philippians 4:19: “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” He told me to walk the carpet — to pace up and down quoting that promise out loud for hours. My heart would scream back about my empty bank account, but I kept speaking the Word.

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. I cannot manufacture faith, but I can fill my ears and my mouth with God’s Word until faith rises. One day, while walking or driving, I realised I actually believed it. My God does supply all my need. The words had framed a new internal reality.

**Key Two: Words Are Like Seeds That Produce a Harvest**

Jesus said the seed is the word of God. Many people try to reap a harvest they have never sown. I remember a lady in our church in France who met weekly with other women to pray for unity. Every time she prayed she would say, “Let the walls fall down, let the walls fall down.” She meant the walls of division, yet one day the literal walls of the building collapsed around them.

I have met many believers who go around saying, “This will never work for me. My children will never walk with God. People don’t want to hear about Jesus. I’m no good at this.” And that becomes their lived reality. God is not mocked; whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.

**Key Three: Be Consistent in Speaking the Word of God**

Jesus said, “If you continue in My word, then you are My disciples indeed.” James speaks of the man who looks into the perfect law of liberty, the mirror of God’s Word, and continues in it. There is power in continuing.

I have met people who say, “I tried speaking God’s Word and it didn’t work.” What they really mean is they spoke it for a while and then stopped. They gave up. Do not give up. Let God’s Word be continually in your heart and continually in your mouth. Get up every day and declare His promises over your life.

Most of us want instant miracles. We want to speak the Word once and see immediate results. Yet God is often waiting for us to continue in His Word. As we act on the Word, we activate the Word.

Simply put, speak the promise, not the problem. Speak the truth, not the circumstance. Keep speaking until your heart believes and your life begins to line up with heaven’s language.

Selah.

**10 Questions for Reflection:**

1. What language are you speaking most often over your life right now — the language of promise or the language of problem?

2. Which promise from God’s Word do you need to begin putting in your mouth daily?

3. Have you ever spoken God’s Word consistently until it moved from your mouth to your heart?

4. What negative words have you been sowing that may be producing an unwanted harvest?

5. How would your internal reality change if you framed it daily with Scripture?

6. In what area are you waiting for a miracle while God may be waiting for your continued confession?

7. Do your daily words line up more with your circumstances or with God’s promises?

8. What would it look like for you to “continue in His Word” this week?

9. Are you trying to believe first, or are you willing to speak the Word until faith comes?

10. How can you make speaking God’s promises a daily discipline rather than an occasional attempt?
