We have been exploring the vital journey of uncovering God’s dream and vision for our lives—not merely acknowledging its existence somewhere out there, but bringing it down to earth, writing it down, and stepping into it as a defined and enacted reality. God has a purpose for every life, much like He had for the nation of Israel in the Old Testament. He blessed them with promises, a land flowing with abundance, and His Word, yet it was never simply about enjoying those gifts in isolation. His deeper call was for them to serve as a nation of priests, interceding for the world, demonstrating what it means to walk with Him, carrying His presence, and ultimately bringing forth the Messiah. Today, I want to share five principles that will guide you in finding and fulfilling that purpose in your own life.
God Has Both a Map and a Guide
As it is written in Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV): “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
Years ago, when I began traveling in ministry, I relied on large paper maps or printed instructions from services like MapQuest. They provided a broad overview, a two-dimensional viewpoint from above, showing the entire journey. Yet, if you missed a turn or lost your bearings, you were stuck—forced to backtrack or start over. God has such a map for your life: His wise, overarching plan, with thoughts and ways far above our own. The Bible serves as that map, full of promises and directions. But here’s the truth—many Christians try to navigate solely by that map, and it only takes them so far.
What transforms everything is the guide: the Holy Spirit, who knows exactly where you are in this moment and interacts with the map to direct you. Like a GPS that recalibrates when you veer off course, God doesn’t abandon you in your mistakes. He realigns, restarts, and leads you forward. Even when you mess up or take the wrong path, He recalibrates with grace. Trust in Him fully; acknowledge Him in every step. He will direct your path—not rigidly, but relationally, through that living guide within you. Selah.
Our Choices Are More Influential Than We Realize
As it is written in Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV): “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
We often speak loftily of free will, affirming our ability to choose—as I can choose to lift my Bible right now. Yet, in this very moment, countless influences shape our lives in ways we scarcely notice: gravity pulling objects downward, cultural norms dictating our clothing, weather affecting our plans. Some are harmless, but others subtly override God’s purposes, predetermining decisions that lead us astray.
As Christians, we are on a journey of breaking free from the world’s unconscious grip, moving into alignment with God’s plans. This requires awareness and intentionality. Train yourself in His ways; recognize those hidden forces and choose to submit them to Him. What begins as small choices compounds over time, rooting you in His path rather than the world’s defaults. I am convinced that grasping this shifts everything—our decisions hold eternal weight.
Living on Purpose Transforms Life
As it is written in Ecclesiastes 9:10 (NKJV): “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.”
God calls us to live intentionally, with purpose driving every action. No matter how blessed you may be, without that anchor, life unravels—chasing trivial or even sinful pursuits. Consider David, who served God’s purposes in his generation before going to his rest. Yet, there were seasons when he forgot his role as shepherd and leader of Israel. In his prosperity as king, he stepped back from his duties, letting others fight while he idled, leading to adultery, murder, and widespread devastation.
Was David inherently wicked? No—he simply drifted from his purpose. When we rediscover and embrace God’s call, it transforms us: infusing energy, direction, and fulfillment. As we age, this becomes even more crucial. I have seen people retire with financial security yet wander listlessly, devoid of meaning. Others cling to outdated methods of fulfilling their vision, failing to adapt to new seasons. A true God-given purpose endures for life, but its expression evolves. Seek how to live it out now, in this season, with all your might. It will guard your heart and guide your steps.
Partial Vision Leads to an Imbalanced Life
As it is written in James 1:4 (NKJV): “But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”
God desires wholeness in every area of your life—not a fragmented existence where His vision touches one part while others remain untouched. Too many compartmentalize: pursuing ministry here, yet neglecting family, finances, or health there. This leads to imbalance, where depth in one realm exposes shallowness in others.
Consider ministry itself—you cannot simply prepare a message and deliver it mechanically. True ministry flows from who you are, from the depth of your relationship with God. The depth of your ministry is determined by the depth of your relationship. God has plans for your spiritual life, your calling, but also for your daily habits, your relationships, your resources. Eliminate any God-free zones; invite Him into the totality. Pursue complete vision, allowing patience to perfect His work in you, so you lack nothing—whole, entire, integrated in His purposes.
Seek God’s Heart, Not Merely His Will
As it is written in Psalm 37:4 (NKJV): “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.”
We often approach God’s will as a static blueprint—a two-dimensional snapshot to follow rigidly. Yet, it is possible to fulfill His will while missing His heart entirely. Years ago, while teaching in a Bible school, I stated that prophecy reveals the will of God. In that moment, I heard an audible “No”—a voice that stopped me cold. No one else in the room reacted; it was for me alone. The Lord then impressed upon my heart: Prophecy reveals not the will of God, but the heart of God.
He continued: You can do My will but miss My heart, but if you fulfill My heart, you will always end up in My will. Write that down and ponder it. The Pharisees knew God’s rules meticulously—they tithed herbs and obeyed outwardly—yet they utterly missed His heart of mercy, justice, and love. Engage with what moves God: the things He loves, the burdens He carries. Delight in Him; align with His affections. In doing so, you will naturally step into His plans, not as dutiful actions, but as expressions of intimate communion.
In this journey of personal vision, remember: God has equipped you with both map and guide, calling you to choices that align with His heart. Living on purpose brings transformation, wholeness, and fulfillment—avoiding the pitfalls of imbalance or mere compliance. Press into this; let it shape your days.
Selah.
