3 Keys to Obtaining the Promises of God

You are not called simply to stand on the promises of God. You are called to live in the promised land — the land of promises. God has given us exceedingly great and precious promises, and it is vital that we learn how to obtain them and walk in them in our daily lives.

As it is written in Hebrews 6:12, “That you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”

**Key One: Identify the Promise That Fits Your Situation**

The Bible is filled with promises for every circumstance we will ever face. Yet so often we struggle because we have not yet found the right promise for the right situation. It is like trying to open a locked door with the wrong key.

I remember reading *Pilgrim’s Progress* with my dad as a child. In one unforgettable scene, Christian and his companion are thrown into the Dungeon of Despair. They sit there moping, thinking they might die in that dark place. Then suddenly the companion remembers something. He says, “I have a key!” That key, given to him earlier by the Lord, would fit every lock in the dungeon. The name of the key was Promise — or more accurately, the key of faith.

The key of faith will unlock every closed door in front of you. Many times in the evangelical world we stand before a closed door and immediately begin to offer familiar explanations: “It is not God’s will… It is not God’s timing…” Yet the Bible rarely gives us those reasons when doors remain shut. Often the door stays closed simply because we have not yet found the right key.

When you pray, learn to start with the answer rather than the problem. All the great prayers in Scripture were prayers of promise, not prayers of panic. Find the promise that addresses your exact need, then pray that promise back to God. This is where faith begins to rise.

**Key Two: Believe the Promise Is for You Personally**

It is one thing to believe the promises of God in a general sense. It is another thing entirely to believe they are spoken directly to you.

About half an hour before I recorded this teaching, I was setting up a new piece of technology in my office. The box contained wires, parts, and a thick user manual in multiple languages. Like most people today, I went straight to YouTube to watch a short video of someone actually using the equipment. I wanted to see the parts in action.

Many believers treat the Bible exactly like that user manual. They see it as an operating instruction for the Christian life: God gave us a book; now figure it out. But the Bible is far more than a manual. It is God speaking personally to you.

Do you remember the feast of Belshazzar in Babylon? The king and his guests were desecrating the holy vessels taken from the temple when a hand appeared and wrote on the wall: “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin.” That message was not a general warning for the nation. It was written directly to Belshazzar. His number was up.

In the same way, when God speaks in His Word, He is speaking to you. It is not enough to believe that Jesus is the Saviour of the world. You must believe He is *your* Saviour. It is not enough to believe the promises are true for the Church. You must believe they are true for you personally, right now, in your situation.

When this truth gripped my heart many years ago, everything changed. The Bible became a love letter and a command from my Father, addressed to me by name.

**Key Three: Act on Your Belief Until Manifestation Arrives**

Belief begins in the heart. As Romans 10:10 says, “For with the heart one believes unto righteousness.” Yet belief that stays locked in the heart rarely produces anything visible. True biblical faith always moves from the heart to the head, to the mouth, and finally to the feet.

Faith is an act.

I remember visiting a church in Holyhead about twenty years ago, an old-fashioned Welsh chapel where my parents had attended. After I preached, an elderly man approached me. He said, “Smith Wigglesworth preached in this very church.” I was amazed. I took the man aside and asked what Wigglesworth had said. The old gentleman scratched his head and replied that Wigglesworth had really only said two things. First, he strode up and down the platform declaring, “Only believe, only believe, doubt not, only believe.” Then he shifted and shouted in his strong Yorkshire accent, “Faith is an act!”

Faith is an act. It is not merely saying, “I believe the promises.” It is doing something because you believe the promises.

Think of Moses at the Red Sea. Behind him came the armies of Egypt. In front of him lay an uncrossable sea. Around him stood two to three million frightened Israelites. Moses cried out to the Lord, and God answered, “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward. But lift up your rod and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it.” Moses had an old stick in his hand, yet when he acted on God’s word, God acted. The sea parted.

I have learned this truth over many years: when you act upon the Word of God, you activate the Word of God. When you begin to live as if the Bible is true, God moves as if the Bible is true.

Simply put, do not wait for feelings or visible evidence before you act. Step out on the promise. Speak the promise. Walk in the promise. Keep acting in faith until the manifestation arrives.

Selah.
